biography
The daughter of a pastor and a singer sang in the church choir and in the family gospel choir , the “Peebles Choir”, which her grandfather had founded at a young age . As a teenager, she also sang in clubs in her hometown, where she was eventually discovered by Oliver Sain and hired for his R&B revue. During a gig in Memphis in 1968, she was offered a contract with the Hi Records label .
In addition to her work as a singer, Ann Peebles began writing songs with Hi Records singer and composer Don Bryant. In the early 1970s she had several successful singles and albums, led by I Can't Stand the Rain (1973 single, 1974 album). In 1974 Peebles and Bryant married.
With the rise of the disco wave and the sale of Hi Records in 1977, commercial success waned. After a musical hiatus, Peebles released a new album, Call Me , in 1989 , which was followed by more. She was also featured on various Maria Muldaur albums. 2010 Ann Peebles worked on the album Memphis Blues by Cyndi Lauper with.
