Al Jackson, Jr. (born November 27, 1935 in Memphis , Tennessee , † October 1, 1975 ) was an American drummer, record producer and songwriter. He is best known as a founding member of Booker T. & the MG's .

life and work

Al Jackson learned to drum as a child and played in his father's band. As a teenager he began drumming in Willie Mitchell's band . In 1962 he founded the house band of Stax Records , Booker T. & the MG's , together with Booker T. Jones (keyboard), Steve Cropper (guitar) and Lewis Steinberg (bass; replaced by Donald Dunn in 1964 ) .

When the success of Booker T. & the MG's waned in the early 1970s, Jackson worked primarily as a producer and session musician. Artists he has played for include Eric Clapton , Freddie King , Herbie Mann, and many others.

In 1975 the members of Booker T. & the MG's decided to record a new album. On October 1, 1975, Al Jackson was shot dead by multiple gunshots when he came home at night. The facts of the matter were never clearly clarified.

In 2016, Rolling Stone listed Jackson ninth of the 100 best drummers of all time .
