Castrovillari ( Latin Castrum Villarum ) is an Italian city in the province of Cosenza and belongs to the Calabria region with 21,619 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).
Location and dates
The community extends over an area of 130 km². Castrovillari is located on the eastern edge of the Pollino National Park , exactly between the Tyrrhenian Sea in the west and the Ionian Sea in the east.
The neighboring communities are: Altomonte , Cassano all'Ionio , Cerchiara di Calabria , Chiaromonte ( PZ ), Civita , Frascineto , Morano Calabro , San Basile , San Lorenzo Bellizzi , San Lorenzo del Vallo , Saracena , Spezzano Albanese and Terranova di Pollino ( PZ ) .
history
Paleolithic and Neolithic finds indicate a lively Stone Age settlement history in the region. The area of Castrovillaris stood after 720 BC. Under the influence of the Greek colony Sybaris . Since the end of the Second Punic War , Lower Italy finally belonged to the Roman Empire . The name Castrum Villarum probably originated during the Byzantine rule and indicates a fortified place that served as a refuge for the rural population from the Ostrogoths and other " barbarians " from the 6th century .
