Montalto Uffugo is an Italian commune in the province of Cosenza in the Calabria region with 20,454 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).
Location and dates
Montalto Uffugo is located 30 km northwest of Cosenza . The city is located on a hill on the western bank of the Crati River . The inhabitants live from trade, agriculture and tourism.
The neighboring communities are Fuscaldo , Lattarico , Luzzi , Paola , Rende , Rose , San Benedetto Ullano , San Fili and San Vincenzo La Costa .
Attractions
The cityscape is characterized by numerous old buildings. The parish church was redesigned from 1454 and in the baroque period . Inside the parish church there is an altarpiece and wooden figures from the 17th and 18th centuries. Inside the church of S. Franceso da Paola there is a baroque mausoleum. The church of S. Chiara has a 15th century portal.

Every year on Good Friday there is a procession. The city's specialties are the pastilli (dried chestnuts).
The place has gained international fame through its relationship with the composer Ruggero Leoncavallo , who witnessed a murder here as a child, which 30 years later inspired the opera Bajazzo .
