Cleto is an Italian commune in the province of Cosenza in the Calabria region with 1235 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).

location

Cleto is 45 km south of Cosenza . The neighboring municipalities are Aiello Calabro , Amantea , Martirano Lombardo ( CZ ), Nocera Terinese ( CZ ), San Mango d'Aquino ( CZ ) and Serra d'Aiello . The city is located at an altitude of 200 meters above sea level at the foot of Mount St. Angelo, not far from the Tyrrhenian Sea .

The following legend has been passed down about the name and founding of the city : During the war of Troy , Penthesilea , queen of the Amazons , was killed by Achilles . Her nurse or maid, Kleite, heard the news, prepared an honorable burial for her, settled there and built a city after her name, later probably called Cleto.

Attractions

  • The Normans built the village on the slopes of Monte Sant'Angelo and the castle overlooking the valley to the sea.
  • The Consoler's Church was built in 1600, renovated in 1800 and has a bell tower with a 17th century spire. The ceiling frescos are by Aloisio von Aiello.
  • The church of Santa Maria Assunta dates from 1730 and is built in the Renaissance style with baroque elements.
  • The Church of the Holy Rosary (Chiesa del Santissimo Rosario) is also known as Castellense Church and is located in the old town not far from the castle gate.
  • The Castello di Savuto is located in the nearby village of Savuto.

The vegetation is typical of the Mediterranean, there are numerous olive trees, and orange and lemon trees in the area of ​​the Savuto River . By car, Cleto can be reached via the Autostrada Salerno-Reggio Calabria exit Falerna , then further north to Campora San Giovanni and then 10 km of mountain road. The Lamezia Terme airport is 28 km away, it is from there a bus about Campora San Giovanni, Cletus and Aiello Calabro . Amantea Train Station is 16 km from Cleto.
