Tarsia is a southern Italian municipality in the province of Cosenza in the Calabria region with 1948 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).
Tarsia is located about 44 kilometers north of Cosenza. The place is in the lower part of the Crati River . The neighboring municipalities are Bisignano , Corigliano-Rossano , Roggiano Gravina , San Demetrio Corone , San Lorenzo del Vallo , San Marco Argentano , Santa Sofia d'Epiro , Spezzano Albanese and Terranova da Sibari .
The place is strongly agricultural. Fruit, grain and olives as well as cattle and sheep are grown or produced.
Under the fascist regime of Benito Mussolini there was an internment camp at the foot of the village. Between 1940 and 1943, this Campo Ferramonti housed 2,000 civilians, around three-quarters of whom were foreign Jews, who had been picked up by Italian security forces on their escape route. The local population showed solidarity to help care for the inmates.
In 2016 the project of the International Cemetery for Drowned Boat Refugees became more concrete.
