San Benedetto Ullano (in Arbëresh , IPA : [ar'bəreʃ] : Shën Benedhiti ) is an Italian municipality with 1464 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Cosenza in Calabria .

The area of ​​the municipality is at an altitude of 460 m above sea level and covers an area of ​​19 km² . San Benedetto Ullano is located about 29 km northwest of Cosenza . The neighboring communities are Fuscaldo , Lattarico and Montalto Uffugo .

history

The place has very old origins and the first historical records go back to the end of the 12th century when it was a fiefdom of the Norman dukes of Montalto and a Benedictine monastery would have been founded there, which would have given the place its name, but any of them Sources are missing. The medieval “Borgo” (Italian for Burgus, fortified place ”) had a decisive demographic and economic boom in the second half of the 15th century with a subsequent urban development when it was settled by Albanian refugees ( Arbëresh ) around 1478 .

In October 1732 Pope Clement XII founded in San Benedetto Ullano the “Collegio Corsini”, a university whose aims were very specific. It was to provide education, instruction in classical literature and in the philosophical and theological sciences, as well as training young Italo-Albanians, prospective priests of the Byzantine Rite , to meet the spiritual needs of the Albanians of the Kingdom of Naples and the missions of the Eastern Greeks . With the establishment of the college with Byzantine rite, Pope Clement XII decreed. the Greco-Byzantine rite on Italian soil.
