Orsomarso is a place in the northwest of the province of Cosenza in the Calabria region in Italy with 1198 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).

Location and dates

The place is 102 km north of Cosenza . The inhabitants live mainly from tourism. There are good hiking trails in the vicinity of the place. Orsomarso lies on the lower reaches of the Lao River . The districts ( frazione ) are Bonicose, Buonangelo, Castiglione, Marina di Orsomarso, Molina, Scorpari and Vallementa. The neighboring municipalities are Lungro , Mormanno , Papasidero , San Donato di Ninea , Santa Domenica Talao , Santa Maria del Cedro , Saracena , Scalea and Verbicaro .

Population development

According to the last census by ISTAT , 545 households were registered in 2001. The 15.8% reduction in the number of inhabitants between 1991 and 2001 indicates a clear trend towards rural exodus. Since the historic high of 1951, the population has even fallen by around 55%.

Attractions

The Byzantine church of Santa Maria di Mercure from the 11th century with its clock tower, which can be seen from afar, stands on a ledge. The climb offers a picturesque view over the Lao river valley, the piazza and the main church of San Giovanni Battista from the 17th century.
