The source of the Mércure

The Lao rises in the Parco Nazionale del Pollino on Monte Serra in Viggianello (Basilicata) near Rotonda (Basilicata) , flows first to the west, crosses the border between the regions of Basilicata and Calabria, turns to the south, passes the places Laino Borgo and Laino Castello and crosses the A3 Autostrada motorway . As a result, it continues to flow in a south-south-westerly direction, past Papasidero , until, after a run of 51 km south of Scalea, it flows into the Tyrrhenian Sea .

Its catchment area is 601 km².
