Spezzano Albanese (in Arbëresh , IPA : [ ar'bəreʃ ] : Spixanë ) is an Italian municipality founded by Arbëresh ( IPA : [ar'bəreʃ] ) in the province of Cosenza in Calabria with 6919 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).
Location and dates
Spezzano Albanese is about 51 kilometers north of Cosenza on the lower reaches of the Crati River . The neighboring municipalities are Cassano allo Ionio , Castrovillari , Corigliano-Rossano , San Lorenzo del Vallo , Tarsia , Terranova da Sibari . The districts are Spezzano Albanese Scalo and Spezzano Albanese Terme.
history
Spezzano Albanese was founded around 1478 by Albanian refugees ( Arbëresh ) and is still inhabited today exclusively by long-established ethnic Albanians.
traffic
The place has a train station on the Cosenza - Sibari railway line and was the starting point of the narrow-gauge railway leading to Lagonegro . In addition, the forest railway Zoccalia led to the neighboring village of Firmo and on to the terminus Lungro .
