The Crati (ancient Greek: Κρᾶθις ) is a river in Calabria in southern Italy . The Crati is 91 km long, making it the longest river in Calabria. It rises at an altitude of 1742 m in the Sila Mountains on Monte Timpone Bruno, in the area of the municipality of Aprigliano . The catchment area of the river is 2440 km². Its main tributaries are the Busento and the Coscile . The Busento flows into the Crati near Cosenza . The Coscile flows into the Crati shortly before it flows into the Ionian Sea . The sea forms the Gulf of Corigliano at the mouth of the Crati within the Gulf of Taranto . Before the mouth, the river flows through the Sibari plain. In antiquity, this plain was a settlement area of the Magna Graecia with the cities of Sybaris and Thurioi , later a swamp area until the 20th century. Today the plain is used intensively for agriculture. A few hundred meters south of the mouth of the Crati are the port of Corigliano Calabro and its district of Schiavonea .
