Around 1050, the later Duke of Apulia and Calabria and Norman ruler Robert Guiskard (* around 1015, † 1085) chose the strategically located San Marco Argentano as the seat for himself and his 60-strong troop and had a solid stone defense tower built.
In 1431, at the age of 15, Saint Francis de Paola was brought to the monastery of San Marco Argentano, in whose magnificent church he made his vows . In the cathedral there is the silver processional cross, a creation of the silversmith master Giovanni di Longobucco .
Today, San Marco Argentano is primarily known as the place where Butirro, a cheese made from the milk of cows that calved a year ago, is made. It is similar to the burrini from Apulia.
