The UCI WorldTour 2020 is the 10th edition of the highest racing series in men's road cycling .
Planning
According to the plans of the UCI - after the cancellation of the California tour originally listed in the calendar - the UCI WorldTour 2020 comprised 36 stage and one-day races on four continents , including the three-week Grand Tours Tour de France , Giro d'Italia and Vuelta a España , as well important classics , including the five monuments of cycling Milan – Sanremo , Tour of Flanders , Paris – Roubaix , Liège – Bastogne – Liège and Tour of Lombardy . The competitions are scheduled to take place from January to October 2020. The tour of Turkey is no longer listed in the WorldTour calendar, as it was unable to guarantee the minimum presence of 10 UCI WorldTeams in the previous two editions .
The specially licensed UCI WorldTeams, who are obliged to start all races that were already on the calendar in 2016, are entitled to start. Due to a reform of road cycling, selected UCI ProTeams are also based on the sporting results , but they are not obliged to start. Further UCI ProTeams can be invited by the respective organizer of a race of their choice. A national team from the host country is also eligible to participate with the approval of the Professional Cycling Council .
As an innovation, the UCI Classics Series should be introduced in 2020 , in which the one-day races of the UCI WorldTour should be summarized. In contrast to the UCI WorldTour itself, which has not had its own overall ranking since 2019 , an overall winner should be awarded after this one-day racing series has been completed. In December 2019, the UCI announced that it would postpone the UCI Classics Series with the aim of introducing the racing series later in agreement with the teams, race organizers and drivers.
Effects of the Covid-19 pandemic
After the UAE Tour was shortened by two days at the end of February as a result of positive tests for the COVID-19 pathogen SARS-CoV-2, the cancellation of the beginning and end due to official requirements in connection with the spread of COVID-19 pandemic in Italy Strade Bianche , Tirreno – Adriatico and Milan – Sanremo races scheduled for mid-March . The organizer said he would try to catch up on the races at another time. Furthermore, Paris – Nice was shortened by one day due to the pandemic . Further cancellations followed due to the pandemic .
On May 5, 2020, the UCI announced the new racing calendar for the WorldTour, which, in addition to numerous postponements, also included the pandemic-related cancellations of the E3 Prijs Vlaanderen , the Tour de Romandie , the Tour de Suisse , the Volta a Catalunya , the Tour of the Basque Country and the Clásica San Sebastian took into account. The organizers of the WorldTour one-day races were given the opportunity to reduce the number of starters per team to six; if the organizers do not make use of this, the teams can choose between six and seven starters. The number of starters per team in the GrandTours remained at eight and that in other WorldTour stage races at seven. At a meeting of the UCI's Management Committee , further adjustments were made, including further rejections. At the beginning of August, the Tour of Guangxi , which had meanwhile been postponed to November 5 to 10, 2020, was finally canceled.

Teams
In October 2019, the UCI announced that among the applicants for a UCI WorldTeam license, all WorldTeams from the previous year and the former UCI Professional Continental Team Cofidis, Solutions Crédits (name 2020: Cofidis ) had met the sporting criterion of a license. The Israel Cycling Academy team (name 2020: Israel Start-Up Nation ) took over the license of the disbanded Katusha Alpecin team . Among the applicants for a license as a UCI ProTeam, Total Direct Énergie qualified for mandatory invitations in all competitions and Wanty-Gobert Cycling Team (name 2020: Circus-Wanty Gobert ) qualified for mandatory invitations in the WorldTour one-day races. The final licensing as a prerequisite for the status as a WorldTeam was made by the decision of the licensing commission based on administrative, ethical and financial criteria. Finally, all athletically qualified teams - most recently Mitchelton-Scott - were licensed as a WorldTeam.
