The list of winners of the great country tours in cycling lists all the winners of the three major national tours in road cycling - Giro d'Italia , Tour de France and Vuelta a España , and " Grand Tours " (narrow, originally French... Grands Tours ) called - on. In further lists, the individual drivers and nations are sorted according to the number of their victories, both in total and for each individual tour. In addition, the drivers who managed to win several of the tours in a calendar year are shown separately.
The three major state tours are the only races in the cycling racing calendar that are held over more than 14 days and are therefore also called the three-week tours . In the early years, some of the tours were held over a shorter period of time. The order of the tours in the table - Giro d'Italia, Tour de France and Vuelta a España - corresponds to the current order. Up until 1994, the Vuelta a España was the first of the three tours during the year. It has only been held in September as the last of the races since 1995. The colored background of the driver's names is based on the current guide jerseys of the tours - the Maglia Rosa ("pink jersey") at the Giro d'Italia, the Maillot jaune ("yellow jersey") at the Tour de France and the Maillot Rojo ("red Jersey ") at the Vuelta a España. The leadership jerseys were only introduced to the tours some time after their creation and at the Vuelta a España the colors of the leadership jersey changed several times in history. However, for a uniform presentation, all winners of the respective tour are stored accordingly.
A total of 149 drivers were able to win at least one of the major national tours, 53 of which were multiple successes. Belgian Eddy Merckx is the record winner with a total of eleven successes in major country tours . Merckx is also one of seven drivers who have won each of the three tours at least once in their career. The other six are the Briton Chris Froome , the Italians Felice Gimondi and Vincenzo Nibali , the two French Jacques Anquetil and Bernard Hinault and the Spaniard Alberto Contador . The latter two are the only drivers who were able to finish each of the three tours victorious more than once. The most successful nation in the major country tours is Italy with a total of 85 successes.
The record for the most victories in one of the three tours was held by the American Lance Armstrong with seven victories in the Tour de France, which he was stripped of in 2012 because of doping. Jacques Anquetil, Bernard Hinault and Eddy Merckx as well as the Spaniard Miguel Indurain achieved the most victories at the Tour de France with five successes each. Record winners of the Giro d'Italia are Eddy Merckx as well as the Italians Alfredo Binda and Fausto Coppi with five successes each, at the Vuelta a España the Swiss Tony Rominger and the Spaniards Roberto Heras and Alberto Contador with three successes each, Heras in 2005 after his original fourth success (initially) was subsequently disqualified for doping.
So far, no driver has won all three tours in a calendar year. Eddy Merckx, however, managed to win four round trips in a row (Giro d'Italia and Tour de France 1972, Vuelta a España and Giro d'Italia 1973); Bernard Hinault and Christopher Froome were victorious on three tours in a row (Hinault: Giro d'Italia and Tour de France 1982, Vuelta a España 1983; Froome: Tour de France and Vuelta a España 2017, Giro d'Italia 2018). Victory in two tours in one calendar year was achieved by a total of nine drivers; The record holder is Eddy Merckx with four double wins. Most recently, Christopher Froome won two tours in one calendar year in 2017 with the Tour de France and the Vuelta a España.
