List of the winners of the mountain ratings in major cycling tours

The list of the winners of the mountain classifications in major national cycling tours lists all the winners of the mountain classifications of the three major national tours, also known as "Grand Tours", in road cycling - Giro d'Italia , Tour de France and Vuelta a España . In further lists, the individual drivers and nations are sorted according to the number of their victories, both in total and for each individual tour. In addition, the drivers who managed to win the corresponding rating in more than one tour per year are shown separately.

The three major state tours are the only races in the cycling racing calendar that are held over more than 14 days and are therefore also called the three-week tours . In the early years, some of them were held over a shorter period of time. The order of the tours in the table - Giro d'Italia, Tour de France and Vuelta a España - corresponds to today's order. Up to and including 1994, the Vuelta a España was the first of the three tours during the year; it has only been held in September as the last of the races since 1995. The colored background of the driver's names is based on the current color scheme of the rating jerseys for the individual tours - the maglia azzurra ("azure jersey") at the Giro d'Italia, the maillot blanc à pois rouges ("white jersey with red dots") at the Tour de France and the maillot lunares ("[blue] dotted jersey") at the Vuelta a España. Mountain ratings were introduced at the Giro d'Italia and the Tour de France some time after they were created - at the younger Vuelta a España with the first event - and it then took a few more decades until the leaders of this category were marked with a special jersey . The best climber of the Tour de France was awarded the “Grand Prix de la Montagne” when the mountain classification was introduced in 1933; only 42 years later was the now famous red-dotted jersey used for the first time in 1975. Especially at the Vuelta a España, the colors of the jersey changed several times in its history. For a clearer presentation, however, all winners are stored uniformly.

So far (as of July 6, 2016) a total of 118 different drivers have secured at least one overall mountain classification, 37 of which have been multiple successes. Record winners with a total of nine titles are the Italian Gino Bartali , who is also the best climber of the Giro d'Italia with seven ratings, and the Spaniard Federico Bahamontes . With seven successes, the French Richard Virusque holds the best mark of the Tour de France, while the Spaniard José Luis Laguía leads the Vuelta a España with his five mountain ratings. His compatriot Julio Jiménez , who was active in the 1960s, is the only driver who managed to win more than twice each of the mountain ratings of two Grand Tours. By far the most successful nation in terms of mountain ratings won in the major country tours is Spain with a total of 80 successes.

Federico Bahamontes and the Colombian Luis Herrera were the only drivers so far to win the mountain classifications of all three major country tours - but none of them could combine all three within one calendar year. They fought for ten drivers twice in one season. The last time he achieved this was the Swiss Tony Rominger in 1993 when he was the best in the mountains at both the Tour de France and the Vuelta a España. The Spaniard Andrés Oliva is the only one to have secured two mountain ratings in two years.

Round trips

Before 1933, no mountain ratings were held. If no winner is recorded for the years after 1933, the race was not held.

1The results of the victorious Austrian Bernhard Kohl were deleted after he tested positive for the EPO doping agent CERA. The Spaniard Carlos Sastre was second in the mountain classification; however, the ranking has not yet been renewed.
2At the beginning of May 2010, the winner of the 2009 mountain classification, the Italian Franco Pellizotti, was suspended by the World Cycling Association Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) because of abnormal blood values in the “Biological Passport” and disciplinary proceedings were initiated against him. In October 2010 he was acquitted of the doping charge by the National Olympic Committee for Italy (CONI) due to a lack of evidence. Pellizotti then asked the UCI for damages of over 200,000 euros. On March 8, 2011, the International Court of Justice confirmed the two-year ban and also dismissed Pellizotti from all results since May 17, 2009, including the 2009 Tour de France mountain classification. Although he has been removed from the list of results, the UCI does not yet officially have any new mountain jersey winner. Runner-up was the Spaniard Egoi Martínez .
