José Luis Laguía Martínez (born September 3, 1959 in Pedro Muñoz ) is a former Spanish cyclist . He won the mountain classification of the Vuelta a España five times - an unprecedented record to date (2019).

Career

At the age of 20, José Luis Laguía took part in the Vuelta a España 1980 and was able to secure third place in the mountain classification straight away . In the following event he won the mountain classification. 1982 was Laguías most successful year: In addition to his second mountain classification victory - this time combined with three daily victories - he secured overall victories in the Tour of the Basque Country and the Tour of Burgos , was Spanish champion in the road race and also won stages at the Setmana Catalana de Ciclisme and the Tour of Catalonia . The second defense of the Vuelta mountain classification he succeeded in 1983 when he outclassed the competition for second-placed Italian Fiorenzo Aliverti with a lead of 59 points. While the 1984 racing season was rather disappointing for him, he was able to build on previous performances in 1985 and 1986. After he separated from the Reynolds team in 1986, the sporting successes failed to materialize and in 1992 Laguía ended his active career.
