Juan José Cobo Acebo (born February 11, 1981 in Torrelavega ) is a former Spanish cyclist . His greatest career success was the overall victory at the Vuelta a España in 2011 , which, however, was subsequently revoked in 2019 because of doping .

Career

After Cobo became the Spanish U23 time trial champion in 2003 , he rode as a stagiaire for the Italian cycling team Vini Caldirola-Saunier Duval that same year . In 2004 he became a professional with the Spanish team Saunier Duval-Prodir .

In 2009 he was able to win a stage of the Vuelta a España . After he failed to achieve success in 2010, Cobo wanted to end his sporting career in mid-2011. Be convinced after he had to drive at least the season ended, he went for his equipped with a wildcard team Geox-TMC for the 2011 Vuelta a España on. On the 15th stage, a difficult mountain stage on the legendary Alto de Angliru , none of the favorites could follow the excellent climber Cobo. Cobo won the stage and the leadership jersey, was able to defend a lead of 13 seconds until the end of the tour and thus celebrated the greatest success of his career.

For the 2014 season he moved to the Turkish Continental Team Torku Şekerspor , where he ended his international career at the end of the season.

In June 2019, the UCI , the world cycling association, announced that Juan José Cobo Acebo would be suspended for a period of three years from 2009 to 2011 for violating anti-doping regulations. According to the UCI, abnormalities had been found in his biological passport . The result was that his victory at the Vuelta a España 2011 was revoked and the runner-up, Chris Froome , was declared the winner.
