The UCI WorldTour 2016 included 27 cycling races , including the three-week tours Tour de France , Giro d'Italia and Vuelta a España ( Grand Tours ), as well as important classics , including the five monuments of cycling Milan – Sanremo , Tour of Flanders , Paris – Roubaix , Liège – Bastogne – Liège and Giro di Lombardia . The competitions took place from January to October 2016.

Participants were the specially licensed UCI WorldTeams . UCI Professional Continental Teams can also be invited by the respective race organizer. A national team from the host country was also eligible to participate in certain competitions such as the Tour Down Under in Australia or the Tour of Poland .

Originally it was planned that the UCI World Teams would have to take part in the team time trial of the UCI Road World Championships 2016 as well as in races of the UCI WorldTour and that points would be awarded for the team classification of the WorldTour. After a disagreement about travel expenses and a boycott threat from the team operator association AIGCP , an agreement was announced in September that teams are not required to start and that ranking points will not be awarded.
