The 56th Tour of the Basque Country 2016 was a Spanish stage race in the Basque Country and took place from April 4th to 9th, 2016. It was the ninth of a total of 28 races on the UCI World Tour .
The Spaniard Alberto Contador won the Vuelta ciclista al País Vasco for the fourth time in his career . After being relegated to second place at Paris – Nice and the Tour of Catalonia , this is Contador's first victory in a tour in 2016. He won the final time trial ahead of the Colombians Nairo Quintana and Sergio Luis Henao and was thus able to win the Take the lead in the overall standings from Henao. With his win, Contador also took the lead in the UCI WorldTour .
