San Daniele del Friuli or shortly San Daniele ( Friulian Sant Denel , German: St. Daniel in Friuli ) is a small town with 8010 inhabitants (December 31, 2019) in the region of Friuli Venezia Giulia to 252  m above sea level. NN with historical buildings from the 16th to 18th centuries Century. It was largely destroyed by an earthquake in 1976 . Severe damage has also been reported from the earthquake of 1348 .

The city is a member of Cittàslow , a movement founded in Italy in 1999 to slow down and improve the quality of life in cities. It is the place of origin of the world-famous San Daniele ham .

geography

The center of San Daniele is east of the Tagliamento on a hill called Colle Massimo . The city is divided into the districts of Old Town, Borgo Pozzo, Borgo Sacco, Borgo Sopracastello, Chiamanis, Borgo Sottoagaro, Picaron, Borgo Nuovo, Zulins, Bronzacco, Soprapaludo, the places Villanova and Cimano and the settlement Aonedis.

The municipalities bordering the urban area are Rive d'Arcano , Majano , Ragogna , Forgaria nel Friuli , Dignano , Osoppo and Pinzano .

To the south-east lies the provincial capital Udine at a distance of 25 km and Trieste , the capital of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region, 114 km away . After Venice in the southwest there are 140 km.

history

On May 11, 1809, the Austrians led an unfortunate battle of retreat against the French under Archduke Johann near San Daniele del Friuli.

Culture and sights

• The beginnings of the Biblioteca Guarneriana date back to the 15th century, and in 1743 the estate of Giusto Fontanini (1666–1736), a scholar from San Daniele, was included. The holdings of 600 manuscripts, 84 incunabula and 600 early prints are also being considered in international research. The historical part of the library has been housed in the Palazzo Comunale, built in 1415, since the 18th century.
• The Cathedral of San Michele Arcangelo in the city's central square was built between 1707 and 1725. The construction of the campanile began in 1531.
• The church of Sant'Antonio Abate was consecrated in 1308 and has a choir from 1441. It is richly decorated with frescoes from the Renaissance period , including by Pellegrino da San Daniele .

Since 1993 there has been a town partnership with Millstatt am See in Austria , since 1994 with the Alsatian municipality of Altkirch in France and since 2008 with Hersbruck in the metropolitan region of Nuremberg (Bavaria).
