history

The name Lauco is first mentioned in 914. It is derived from the Celtic leucos for dazzling or white. Excavations indicate settlement as early as pre-Roman times. In the Middle Ages the area belonged to the rule of the Patriarch of Aquileia . Around 1420 it fell to the Republic of Venice and in 1797 to Austria-Hungary . It has belonged to Italy since 1866.

Population development

The decline in population (1911: 3154 inhabitants, 1951: 2529 inhabitants, 2001: 877 inhabitants) is not least due to the poor economic situation of the municipality.

  • In the late summer of the hamlet of Uerpa, the folk festival “Fieste dal Pastor” is held, at which everything revolves around the region's dairy products.
  • On Christmas Eve, residents of the various districts of the community come together in Lauco for the torchlight procession “dai Madins”, where they spend the hours before Christmas mass with mulled wine and local specialties.
