Hermann Pernsteiner (born August 7, 1990 in Oberwart ) is an Austrian racing cyclist in the disciplines of mountain bike and road cycling .

Career

Pernsteiner began cycling at the age of eleven in a school race for mountain bikes. He used the hilly terrain of his hometown Kirchschlag in the Bucklige Welt ( Lower Austria ) to train there. In 2004 he joined the Bucklige Welt mountain bike team , which, according to its own definition, sees itself as a cycling club with a special focus on promoting talented racing drivers. He was a member until 2012. In 2011, he first attracted international attention with second place in the U-23 marathon of the European Championship.

This success was decisive for Pernsteiner's move to the Rad.Sport.Szene Ausseerland team in 2012 . In mid-2013 he teamed up with Christina Kollmann and founded the Fill Proforma Racing Team , which from 2014 took part in international mountain bike marathons and stage races such as the Alpentour, Brasil Ride and Bike Transalp. Pernsteiner's success led him to get a contract with the German team Centurion Vaude in 2015 .

In addition to mountain bike races, Pernsteiner also competed in road races from 2016 at the invitation of the Austrian UCI Continental Team Amplatz-BMC . After finishing 16th in the Tour of Slovenia , he finished sixth in the Tour of Austria in 2016 , making him the best Austrian. After successfully contesting several road races in 2017 - including the Tour of Austria 2017 as the third best Austrian in twelfth place - he achieved his first international victory on the road in the Tour d'Azerbaïdjan (from May 3 to 7, 2017) retract. This put Pernsteiner in the spotlight, which is why he was offered a contract with the UCI WorldTeam Bahrain-Merida for 2018 . On September 30, 2017, Pernsteiner said goodbye to mountain biking by winning the Feneberg MTB Extreme Marathon .

At his first start for Bahrain-Merida at the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana , he was 25th overall. At UCI World Tour -race Tour de Romandie , he finished eleventh overall. At the Tour of Japan , Pernsteiner finished second behind Marcos García . Pernsteiner celebrated his first win for his new Bahrain-Merida team on June 3, 2018 at the Gran Premio di Lugano , where he left nine Italians behind. At the Tour of Austria 2018 , Pernsteiner finished second in the overall standings despite a fall on the penultimate stage in which he dislocated his shoulder and broke a finger.

Personal

With a weight of 55 to 58 kg and a height of 168 cm, Pernsteiner has almost ideal body dimensions for a mountain driver.
