Peter Eck (born May 27, 1944 in Schmalkalden ; † April 21 or April 22, 1968 near Kaltenwestheim ) was a fatality on the inner-German border .

Life

Eck, who lived in Schmalkalden, had finished school after the 5th grade, broke off an apprenticeship as a roofer and was imprisoned partly for political reasons, partly for criminal offenses in 1962 and 1966. Finally, on the evening of April 21, 1968, he tried to leave the GDR with his friend Wolfgang F. When crossing the minefield, it triggered a detonation. Wolfgang F. crossed the last fence injured. On April 22, 1968, officers of the western border customs service, informed by Wolfgang F., saw Eck's body lying in the border area. By shouting, they informed the GDR border guards who were recovering the body.

The Meiningen district court sentenced the chief of staff of the 11th Meiningen Border Brigade to a two-year prison sentence on April 1, 1998, which was suspended on probation, among other things for installing the minefields in which Peter Eck died.
