The 69th Tour of Austria 2017 is an Austrian road bike race . The stage race took place from July 2-8, 2017. The bike race was part of the UCI Europe Tour 2017 and was classified in category 2.1 . The tour started in the Styrian capital Graz with the 0.8 kilometer long prologue on the Schlossberg and led in six stages through seven federal states . The destination was Wels in Upper Austria after 1,192.2 kilometers and an altitude of 8625 meters . The highlights of the 2017 tour were the finish of the fourth stage on the Kitzbüheler Horn and the crossing of the Großglockner on the fifth stage. Only Burgenland and Vorarlberg were not affected by the tour. The fifth stage ran between the Walserberg and the Steinpass over German territory.
A total of 15 teams with 8 drivers each and 3 teams with 7 drivers each were at the start. These 141 drivers were made up of 31 nations. Most of the participants came from Austria (31 drivers), followed by the Netherlands (13), Italy (12), France , Russia (10 each) and Germany (8). There are only 3 drivers for Switzerland . Five teams belonged to the UCI WorldTeam / National Team category , seven to the UCI Continental Team category and six to the Continental Team category . In the end, 119 riders reached the destination.
The most famous starters were Elia Viviani , Rein Taaramäe , Ilnur Zakarin , Miguel Ángel López , Igor Anton , Alexander Foliforov , Pieter Weening , Yoann Bagot Patrick Schelling and the Austrian Riccardo Zoidl .
The tour ended with the fastest overall time of Austrian Stefan Denifl (Team Aqua Blue Sport ), who took the lead after the fourth stage on the Kitzbüheler Horn . This would have meant another Austrian victory after 2013 , when Riccardo Zoidl prevailed. They were followed, 37 seconds behind, by Spaniard Delio Fernández (Team Delko Marseille Provence KTM ) and Colombian Miguel Ángel López (Team Astana Pro Team ), who was 59 seconds behind. A second Austrian, Felix Großschartner , who originally missed the podium by just one second as fourth, almost ended up in third place almost two years later, because after his doping confession as part of Operation Aderlass , everyone was also denied results achieved since 2014 withdrawn.
In the mountain classification, the Dutchman Pieter Weening (Team Roompot-Nederlandse Loterij ), who laid the foundation for his success as " Glocknerkönig " , caught the leading Austrian Stephan Rabitsch ( Team Felbermayr Simplon Wels ) in the very last classification . The previous Italian Elia Viviani (Team Nazionale Italiana), who was intercepted by the Belgian Sep Vanmarcke (Team Cannondale Drapac ), had a similar experience in the points classification . Team Dimension Data secured the team ranking ahead of Team Gazprom-Rusvelo (5:42 behind) and Team Roompot-Nederlandse Loterij (10:07 behind).
