The 70th Tour of Austria 2018 was an Austrian road bike race . The stage race took place from July 7th to 14th, 2018 and was part of the UCI Europe Tour 2018 in category 2.1 .

The tour started in the Vorarlberg district capital Feldkirch on a 152.8 kilometer long circuit and led in eight stages through five federal states (Vorarlberg, Tyrol, Styria, Lower Austria and Upper Austria). The destination was Wels in Upper Austria after 1,163.7 kilometers and an altitude of more than 23,000 meters . The highlights of the 2018 tour were the arrival of the third stage on the Kitzbüheler Horn and the fifth stage on the Fuschertörl on the Großglockner . Most of the vertical meters (3621 m) had to be mastered in the sixth stage from Knittelfeld to Wenigzell .

The overall winner was the Belgian Ben Hermans ( Israel Cycling Academy ) ahead of the Austrian Hermann Pernsteiner ( Bahrain-Merida ) and the Italian Dario Cataldo ( Astana Pro Team ). Pernsteiner's team Bahrain-Merida won the team classification , a total of five stages with Matej Mohorič , Giovanni Visconti (twice each) and Antonio Nibali as well as the sprint classification with Visconti . The mountain stage was won by New Zealander Aaron Gate ( Aqua Blue Sports ). Hermans took the lead with his stage win on the mountain finish of the third stage on the Kitzbüheler Horn.

Starting position

A total of 18 teams with 7 drivers each and 2 teams with 6 drivers each were at the start. These 138 drivers were made up of 26 nations. Most of the participants came from Austria (22 drivers), followed by Italy (15), the Netherlands (12), Belgium (11) and Germany and Slovenia (10 each). Only 4 drivers competed for Switzerland . The youngest participant was the Slovenian Aljaz Jarc (Adria Mobil) at 19 years and 3 months. The oldest rider, Jure Golčer , came from the same team at the age of 40 years and 7 months. Four teams belonged to the UCI WorldTeam category .

The Tour of Austria was again very busy in 2018. In the field of participants there were numerous international top stars who have already proven their skills: three world champions ( Matej Mohorič , Alexey Lutsenko and Wout van Aert ), ten stage winners of the Tour de France , the Giro d'Italia and the Vuelta as well as four stage winners of the Tour of Austria.

The Austrians gave Hermann Pernsteiner (Bahrain-Merida) and ex-tour winner Riccardo Zoidl ( Felbermayr Simplon Wels ) the best chance of overall victory. Defending champion Stefan Denifl (Aqua Blue Sport), who was also one of the favorites, had to do without a start after injuries sustained in a training accident. In Pernsteiner's team there were strong competitors with Kanstanzin Siuzou , who came as a reference with the victory in the Tour of Croatia in 2018. There were also strong young drivers in Matej Mohorič and Mark Padun . The strongest cyclist on paper is likely to be Louis Meintjes ( Dimension-Data ), who had two top ten placements in the Tour de France and one in the Vuelta a España. Ben Hermans ( Israel Cycling Academy ) was already able to put himself in the limelight at the 2015 Tour of Austria with second place overall, as was Javier Moreno (2014) ( Delko Marseille Provence KTM ). The extended circle of favorites also included Janez Brajkovič ( Adria Mobil ), Wout van Aert ( Vérandas Willems-Crelan ), Pieter Weening ( Roompot ), Alexey Lutsenko and Dario Cataldo (both Astana Pro Team ) and Patrick Schelling ( Team Vorarlberg-Santic ). Stephen Cummings (Dimension Data), Ildar Arslanov and Alexander Foliforov (both Gazprom-RusVelo ), but also Brendan Canty ( EF Education First-Drapac ) were given good outsider chances.
