The 66th Tour of Austria 2014 was an Austrian road bike race. The stage race took place from July 6th to 13th, 2014 and belonged to the highest category of the UCI Europe Tour 2014 for the ninth time, the "hors categorie" (2HC).
The tour led in eight stages over 1216.5 kilometers from Tulln to Vienna . The highlights were the mountain arrivals on the Sonntagberg (1st stage), the Kitzbüheler Horn (3rd stage) and the Dobratsch (6th stage) as well as the crossing of the Großglockner 5th stage. A total of 19 teams with 151 drivers took part in the tour, but only 124 of them made it to the finish. The race average was 40.88 km / h.
The tour was dominated by the 25-year-old former track cycling world champion Peter Kennaugh (Great Britain), who took the lead in the first stage and did not give up the lead until the finish. Previously, only Austrian Roman Humenberger (1971) and Russian Dmitry Konychev (1987) had won start-to-finish wins . He relegated the Spaniard Javier Moreno (Movistar Team) and the Italian Damiano Caruso (Team Katusha) to ranks two and three. Behind them, Patrick Konrad (Team Gourmetfein Simplon Wels), who won the junior competition, and last year's winner Riccardo Zoidl (Trek Factory Racing), the best Austrians .
In addition , Kennaugh, who competed for Team Sky , also won the points classification ahead of Damiano Caruso and the Austrian Marco Haller (both Team Katusha). The mountain classification was secured by the Russian Maxim Belkow (Team Katusha) ahead of the Colombian Dayer Quintana (Movistar Team) and Peter Kennaugh. The team classification saw the Movistar Team (Spain ) successful ahead of Tinkoff-Saxo (Russia) and the Gourmetfein Simplon Wels (Austria) team.
The only 20-year-old Upper Austrian Georg Mühlberger first drew big attention to himself and was crowned King of the Glockner . After Gerrit Glomser 2008, a local driver was again the winner on Austria's highest mountain. On the final stage, which despite a thunderstorm with an average of 49.3 km / h was the fastest stage in the history of the tour, Marco Haller from Carinthia was the first to cross the finish line and, after 2008 ( René Haselbacher ), achieved an Austrian stage success.
