Athletic career
2001 Giampaolo Caruso was 2001 European champion in the U23 class and in October of the same year in Lisbon vice world champion behind Yaroslav Popovych in the same category. Then he got a contract with the Spanish cycling team O.NCE-Eroski .
Caruso celebrated his first international elite victory in 2003 at the Tour Down Under on the fifth stage, but was disqualified because of a positive doping test for a steroid and banned for six months. At the 2006 Giro d'Italia , he finished in fourth place ahead of many favorites on the first mountain finish.

In 2014 he won the one-day race from Milan to Turin after an attack on the final climb.
In August 2015, a blood sample from Caruso tested positive for EPO . The sample was taken on March 27, 2012 in a training control. He was initially suspended. Caruso should actually start at the Vuelta a España . In June 2017, it was blocked retroactively from August 18, 2015 to August 17, 2017.
