Jaroslaw Popovyč ( Ukrainian Ярослав Павлович Попович , scientific transliteration Jaroslav Popovyč ; born January 4, 1980 in Drohobytsch ) is a former Ukrainian cyclist and later sports director .
Career
Before moving to the pros, Popovytsch rode in the U23 age group in 2000 and 2001 for the Italian cycling team Vellutex-Zoccorinese , whose sporting director Olivano Locatelli discovered him in 1999 when Popovytsch took part in the Giro della Valle d'Aosta for the first time. During this time he won 37 races. His most important successes in the U23 age group include victories at Paris – Roubaix (U23), the Giro delle Regioni , the Giro della Valle d'Aosta and the U23 road race at the 2001 UCI Road World Championships in Lisbon .
In 2002 Popowytsch signed his first professional contract with the GS / II team Landbouwkrediet-Colnago and was able to take twelfth place in his first participation in the Giro d'Italia . In 2003 he achieved a podium finish with third place in his second participation in the Giro d'Italia . The following year he finished fifth in the Giro d'Italia and wore the Maglia Rosa for three days .
For the 2005 season, Popovych signed a contract with the Discovery Channel Pro Cycling Team together with his friend and teammate Volodymyr Bileka . He was one of Lance Armstrong's helpers in his last Tour de France victory - now withdrawn due to doping - and was able to secure twelfth place in the overall standings and the white jersey of the best driver in the youngsters' classification in this first participation. One of his greatest successes to date also dates from the 2005 season: in May he won the overall ranking of the Tour of Catalonia .
At the Tour de France 2006 he could not repeat the result from the previous year and was 25th overall, but won the 12th stage . He also managed a stage win in 2006 at the Vuelta a Castilla y León and the Tour de Georgia , which he was able to finish third in the overall standings.
During the 2007 season, Popowytsch mainly drove as a helper: He supported his teammate Alberto Contador in his victories in the overall standings at Paris – Nice , where Popowytsch himself won a stage, and in the Tour de France , which he placed 8th overall could finish. He started this season as captain of his team at the Giro d'Italia , but retired after the 12th stage because he suffered from the consequences of two falls.
At the beginning of the 2008 season, Popowytsch switched to the Belgian team Silence-Lotto , but was unable to record any notable successes in the course of the season other than third place in the overall standings from Paris-Nice . In November he decided to change the team and signed a two-year contract with the Astana team , where he was to drive as a noble helper for Alberto Contador and Lance Armstrong, whom he knows from times together on the Discovery Channel team.
In 2010 Popowytsch Bruyneel followed to the American team RadioShack and after this merged with the Luxembourg team Leopard Trek to form RadioShack-Nissan .
In the course of the doping investigation by the Public Prosecutor of Padua at the end of 2014, he was suspected of having been a customer of the controversial sports medicine specialist Michele Ferrari .
At Paris-Roubaix 2016 , Popovytsch drove his last race as a cyclist and then became sporting director for his last team, Trek-Segafredo . He finished the race in 86th.
