The 12th stage of the Tour de France 2006 on July 14th, the French national holiday , took the remaining 165 riders from Luchon over 211.5 km through the foothills of the Pyrenees to Carcassonne .

The stage was all about the breakaway attempts. Sébastien Joly , penultimate in the overall standings 1:41 h behind the yellow jersey, started the first attack at 1.5 km ; however, his attack quickly fizzled out. After further unsuccessful attempts, a well-known 15-member group united after the first mountain classification of the day. a. Jens Voigt , Giuseppe Guerini , Damiano Cunego , George Hincapie , David Millar and Michael Rasmussen were among the members. After 70.5 kilometers the group only consisted of nine drivers, as the main field was by no means willing to let the outliers go. After another attack in the leading group by Michael Albasini , this decreased to only five drivers at km 88. Six kilometers later the field was closed again, whereupon several attacks by other drivers followed.

A four-man group with Óscar Freire , Jaroslaw Popowytsch , Alessandro Ballan and Christophe Le Mével , whose advantage grew rapidly and leveled off at four minutes. When there were still eight kilometers to go, Popovytsch, who was best placed in this group in the overall standings, attacked. Only Ballan and Freire were able to follow, while Le Mével fell behind. Several attacks followed within the group of three, all of which were unsuccessful. Only three kilometers before the finish was Popowytsch able to break away decisively. Ballan was unable to close the resulting hole again, while Freire, who had already won twice on this tour, showed no interest in winning the stage. It was Popovytsch's first Tour stage win, Freire left Ballan second without a fight.

With Paolo Savoldelli another well-known driver got out of the tour. After the previous stage on the way to the hotel he collided with a spectator and had to be sewn with 15 stitches on his forehead. He also complained of back pain and dizziness.

Gilberto Simoni , two-time winner of the Giro d'Italia and 22nd in the overall standings, lost 7:42 minutes on the main field after the rear part had lost connection due to the strong crosswind ( wind edge ).
