The 19th stage of the 2006 Tour de France was an individual time trial. It took the riders over 57 km from Le Creusot to Montceau-les-Mines on July 22nd and was the second and last individual time trial of the 2006 Tour de France. It took place in the Saône-et-Loire department in the Burgundy region.
The entire stage was quite wavy and selective. It was in contrast to the first individual time trial on stage 7 , which had a flat profile. The intermediate time measurement points were at km 16.5 in Montchanin-le-Haut , km 34 in Montcenis and km 51.5 in Villa-Sirot . The refreshment point was at 38 km in Saint-Nizier-sur-Arroux .
Before the start of the race, the top three in the overall standings, Óscar Pereiro , Carlos Sastre and Floyd Landis , were close together. Sastre was twelve seconds behind Pereiro, Landis was another 18 seconds behind. Andreas Klöden , the captain of the T-Mobile team , followed the leader 2:29 minutes away and thus still had a chance of a place on the podium of the top three on the final day in Paris .
Another exciting duel took place for victory in the junior ranking. Markus Fothen , U23 time trial world champion of 2003, was just five seconds behind the 2004 Giro winner, Damiano Cunego .
The first driver to start was Wim Vansevenant from Davitamon-Lotto , at that time 141st and last in the overall classification, 3:50:36 hours behind the leader in the overall classification, Óscar Pereiro. Pereiro took to the track as the last starter at 4:15 p.m.
The strong time trialists, who found themselves in the back rows of the overall classification before the start of the stage, mastered the course in around 71 minutes. However, unlike the two previous bouts against the clock, none of their best times lasted for a long time. Only Serhiy Honchar , already winner of the first time trial, made with a final time of 1:07:45 h his claim to the victory clearly. He undercut the previous best time of the German time trial champion Sebastian Lang by 3:18 minutes and won confidently.
In the fight for the white jersey , Damiano Cunego had increased his lead over Fothen by twelve seconds in the first split. At the second measuring point, Cunego already had a lead of 49 seconds. In the third measurement section, Cunego lost 14 seconds of his lead over Fothen, but at the finish his lead was still 31 seconds and he kept the coveted white jersey contrary to all experts' expectations.
In the fight for the yellow jersey , Landis had already made up 1:05 minutes on Sastre and ten seconds on Pereiro after the first intermediate time at 15.5 km. Klöden was eleven seconds behind Landis in the measurement. The trends also continued in the second section. Landis was already driving "virtually" in the yellow jersey , while Klöden was able to shorten his gap to Sastre significantly. At the finish, Landis was 1:29 minutes ahead of Pereiro and secured the overall lead with a 59 second lead. Klöden snatched the podium from Sastre after taking 4:01 minutes from him.
With Robert Hunter , the first rider was disqualified at the end of the stage for exceeding the time limit. His time of 1:25:54 hours was 18:09 minutes slower than Honchar's winning time. He exceeded the waiting period , which in the time trial is 25 percent longer than the winning time. With a time of 1:24:43 h he would have stayed in the race.
