The 17th stage of the Tour de France 2006 on July 20th was the last mountain stage of the year and took the riders over 200.5 km from Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne to Morzine . In addition to the Col des Saisies (1650 m, category 1), the Col des Aravis (1486 m, category 2), the Col de la Colombière (1613 m, category 1) and the Côte de Châtillon-sur-Cluses (735 m, Category 3), a small hill, was the last obstacle on the way into the valley to Morzine, the Col de Joux Plane (1691 m, category HC). The descent from the summit to the destination was twelve kilometers long.
After 17 kilometers, a 14-strong group formed, from which three drivers broke off their attempt to escape a short time later. Eleven drivers remained in the lead, including Patrik Sinkewitz , Juan Manuel Gárate and Stuart O'Grady .
At the start of the Col des Saisies, the group had a 10:40 minute lead over the field. There the Phonak team under the direction of Floyd Landis attacked in the main field . A group remained with Landis, Michael Rogers , Andreas Klöden , Denis Menschow , Cadel Evans and Carlos Sastre . In the meantime, Óscar Pereiro and Cyril Dessel , driving in yellow, had to be torn down. Landis increased the pace one more time, whereupon Klöden and Sastre let him go this time. The group around Klöden then dropped back into the group around Pereiro. The top group reached the summit with eight riders. Landis crossed this with 3:09 minutes behind the leading group and 3:25 minutes ahead of the main field.
Up to the Col des Aravis, Patrice Halgand separated from the leading group, which had meanwhile grown back to its original size. In addition, Landis caught up with the ten pursuers and immediately took over the pace work, which caused the group to fall apart. Only Sinkewitz, O'Grady and Daniele Righi reached the summit of Aravis with Landis. They were 1:13 minutes behind Halgand and 4:31 minutes ahead of the main field.
At the foot of the Col de la Colombière , Landis, Sinkewitz and Righi caught up with Halgand. After O'Grady had already fallen behind, Righi also had to let the three leaders go. A little later, Halgand could not keep up with the pace of the new top duo. The two front runners crossed the pass with a lead of 8:33 minutes over the group with the yellow jersey. At the end of the descent from Col de la Colombière, when Landis' lead had increased to 9:08 minutes, the CSC team increased the pace of the main field significantly. They were supported by T-Mobile . Up to the foot of the Col de Joux Plane , the field reduced the gap to 6:15 minutes.
There Sinkewitz let Landis go and slowed down to wait for his captain Klöden. Sastre attacked in the chasing field and, as on the day before, no other driver could follow. Behind him was Christophe Moreau with a group of five in tow around Evans, Menschow, Michael Boogerd , Damiano Cunego and Fränk Schleck . Klöden, Pereiro and Dessel couldn't keep up with the pace. Cunego overtook Moreau from the group of five, while Klöden had slight problems following Pereiro's pace. This group overtook the ailing Menshov a little later. Moreau could also pass Cunego again. Evans also fell behind the group around Pereiro and Klöden. Landis went first with 5:07 minutes ahead of the descent to Morzine, followed by Sastre and Moreau. In this order they also crossed the finish line. Dessel crashed spectacularly on the descent, but was able to continue the journey.
In the fight for the yellow jersey, Carlos Sastre moved up to 0:12 minutes on Óscar Pereiro. Landis narrowed his gap to 0:30 min and took second place in the mountain classification. Damiano Cunego secured the white jersey of the best young driver for the first time, five seconds ahead of Markus Fothen . After the three Alpine stages, T-Mobile regained the lead in the team standings.
Michael Rasmussen was already the winner of the mountain classification . At the end of the stage he had a lead of 32 points with a maximum of 23 points that were still to be gained on the final three stages.
On July 27, 2006, Phonak announced that Landis had found testosterone doping forbidden by the UCI in the A-sample after the stage . The B sample was also positive.
