The 3rd stage of the Tour de France 2006 on July 4th led from Esch-sur-Alzette in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg over 216.5 km to Valkenburg in the Netherlands , known from the spring classic Amstel Gold Race . The stage also passed through Belgium .
For a long time, the race through the hills of the Ardennes was characterized by five outliers. Jens Voigt pulled away at km 15, who was joined a short time later by José Luis Arrieta , Christophe Laurent , Unai Etxebarria and Jérôme Pineau , who put on the dotted jersey at the end of the day . Arrieta was last in this group a few meters before the final climb, the Cauberg , from the main field. There Matthias Kessler tore the field and reached the summit of the Cauberg with a small lead. As on the second stage, he tried to surprise the sprinters with an escape shortly before the finish. This also succeeded and he saved a narrow lead to the finish, as his team covered the start. Kessler won his first tour stage. The result was rounded off by Michael Rogers ' second place , who gave the T-Mobile team a double victory.
At the end of the day, world champion Tom Boonen secured the yellow jersey for the overall leader and the green jersey for the best in points. The fourth stage was a historic premiere: for the first time in the history of the Tour de France, the overall ranking was led by two reigning world champions. Boonen was world champion on the road, Rogers in the individual time trial.
The stage was overshadowed by several serious falls. So co-favorite Alejandro Valverde had to give up the race with a broken collarbone about 20 km from the finish. Erik Dekker and Fred Rodriguez had to drop out of the race at 153 km .
