On the 16th section of the Tour de France 2006 on July 19th east of Grenoble , the 152 riders still had to climb a total of four passes between Le Bourg-d'Oisans and La Toussuire, spread over 182 km. First we went to the roof of the tour , the Col du Galibier (2646 m, category HC), followed by the Col de la Croix de Fer (2067 m, category HC) and the Col du Mollard (1638 m, category 2). The climb to the mountain arrival in La Toussuire (1705 m, category 1) was 18.4 km long. After the exclusions at the beginning and 25 tasks during the race, only three teams were complete.

At the beginning of the ascent to the Galibier after six kilometers, Tadej Valjavec and Michael Rasmussen pulled away, Sandy Casar joined them. Behind them there was a group of 13 people (including Patrik Sinkewitz , Jaroslaw Popowytsch and Gilberto Simoni ), who were about three minutes behind at the summit of Galibier. In the main field, too, the summit was passed at high speed. The gap to the three leaders was about 4:30 minutes. In the descent from the Galibier, Jaroslaw Popowytsch attacked from the chasing group, but could not break away decisively.

On the climb to the summit of Croix de Fer, Casar was the first in the leading group who could not follow the pace. A little later, Valjavec also had to let Rasmussen go. The chasing group also fell apart and was brought up from the main field. There, the CSC team had increased the pace. A little later Levi attacked Leipheimer , no one followed him. On the summit of the Croix de Fer he had a lead of 2:52 minutes on the group of favorites, from which David Moncoutié had also attacked. Rasmussen was the first to pass the summit with 5:32 minutes ahead of Leipheimer.

At the foot of the Mollard, Leipheimer also caught up with Valjavec after reaching Casar before the Croix de Fer mountain classification. Moncoutié also had to let the favorite group pass them. This passed the pass without incident.

While Rasmussen tackled the climb to La Toussuire solo, CSC and T-Mobile set the pace in the field. Then Denis Menshov attacked , Michael Rogers , Óscar Pereiro and Cadel Evans followed him. A little later, however, the leading group caught up again. After an attack by Carlos Sastre , Floyd Landis , wearing the yellow jersey, collapsed completely and had to be ripped off. Sastre overtook Leipheimer, while T-Mobile drove steadily high speed in a group of nine with still three drivers. After Menshow stepped up the pace, the group fell apart and Leipheimer was caught up too. Then Andreas Klöden increased the pace again. Only Pereiro and Evans followed, while Menshov and Cyril Dessel paid tribute to the high pace. Rasmussen won confidently from Sastre and Pereiro.

Floyd Landis lost 8:10 minutes to Pereiro and Klöden and 10:04 minutes to stage winner Rasmussen, who took over the dotted jersey . Pereiro regained the yellow jersey that he had lost the day before.

Due to the fact that the group set was 44:01 minutes behind the winner, the waiting period was increased from 12 to 14%, otherwise some prominent drivers would have been threatened with exclusion. Only 67 of the 147 riders who completed the stage were within the original time limit.
