The prologue of the Tour de France 2006 , in the July 1, Strasbourg took place downtown, ended with a surprise. The Norwegian Thor Hushovd , actually a sprint specialist, prevailed on the 7.1 km long track just ahead of the former Armstrong noble helper George Hincapie .
Right at the beginning, the German Bert Grabsch had set a best time, which was, however, beaten a little later by his compatriot Sebastian Lang , the reigning German time trial champion. This record lasted for over an hour before it was beaten by Hushovd. Also, David Zabriskie and Hincapie were at the end faster than long. Michael Rogers and Levi Leipheimer , who were previously considered favorites for the day's win, could not meet expectations. David Millar , who drove his first race after a two-year doping penalty, also disappointed.
A curious scene occurred when Floyd Landis , another former Armstrong helper, decided shortly before the start to change one of his wheels due to a cut and thereby started several seconds late.
