The 6th stage of the Tour de France 2006 took the remaining 171 riders on July 7th over 189 km from Lisieux to Vitré .
The stage through Normandy and Brittany began quite uneasily with many attempts to break away. Benoît Vaugrenard was able to recapture the white jersey of Markus Fothen's best young rider with a victory and the associated time credit in the first intermediate sprint . However, this and other breakaway attempts failed early. In the meantime, overall leader Tom Boonen and his competitor Thor Hushovd belonged to a top group of 17, from which Florent Brard , Magnus Bäckstedt and Anthony Geslin were able to break away decisively at km 73 . The remaining 14 drivers were brought up again from the main field. But even the maximum lead of 5:16 minutes was not enough for the runaway trio to arrive in the center of Vitré alone. The escape came to an end four kilometers from the finish.
Robbie McEwen secured victory for the third time at this year's tour with the great help of his teammate Gert Steegmans , who put on the sprint in an exemplary manner for him.
