The Brazilian fairy bass ( Gramma brasiliensis ) is a species of fish from the fairy bass family (Grammatidae). It is very similar to the king fairy bass ( Gramma loreto ).

features

The fish reaches a length of up to 6.6 centimeters (males), the front half of the body is purple, the rear half is yellow, the transition between the two body colors is somewhat blurred.

distribution

The Brazilian fairy bass is only found along the coast of Brazil and on offshore islands south of the mouth of the Amazon between 8 ° and 23 ° south latitude . It lives in coral reefs and over rocky bottoms at depths between 3 and 22 meters.

Way of life

Brazilian fairy bass live individually or in small groups of up to four animals in small caves or under rocky outcrops. There they often swim with the belly side up on the ceiling of the caves or rocky outcrops.

They feed on zooplankton , but, similar to cleaner wrasse , they occasionally clean other fish, especially Chromis multilineata and Haemulon plumieri .
