The 2nd stage of the Tour de France 2006 on July 3rd was 228.5 km long. It led from Obernai to Esch-sur-Alzette in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg .
Immediately after the start, the Spaniards Aitor Hernández and David de la Fuente broke away and had a maximum lead of 11:20 minutes. At the Côte de Kédange-sur-Kanner mountain prize, de la Fuente was able to shake off his companion, but was overtaken by the field around 16 kilometers from the finish.
Individual attempts by the Germans Fabian Wegmann and Matthias Kessler followed , but they were unsuccessful. Kessler was a few seconds ahead on the last kilometer, but had no chance against the sprinters and had to admit defeat fifty meters from the finish line.
Stage winner was Robbie McEwen , while Thor Hushovd, with a total of twelve bonus seconds gained, took the lead in the overall standings again after a day's break. The field had split up into different groups due to a fall two kilometers from the finish line, but the favorites for the overall win all finished the race with the same time.
