The 11th stage of the Tour de France 2006 on July 13th was the second and more demanding stage in the Pyrenees . On the 206.5 km from Tarbes to Val d'Aran in Catalonia , the remaining drivers had to pass five Pyrenees passes, including the Col du Tourmalet (2115 m, category HC), the Col d'Aspin (1489 m, category 1), the Col de Peyresourde (1569 m, category 1) and the Col du Portillon (1293 m, category 1). The goal on the Pla-de-Beret was at an altitude of 1830 m, the mountain classification at 1860 m (category 1).

As on the previous day, some drivers tried to escape to the front right at the beginning. But only at 31.5 km David de la Fuente and Iker Camaño were able to break away . A short time later they were joined by Fabian Wegmann and Juan Antonio Flecha . Their lead quickly grew to a maximum of 8:13 minutes. Together they reached the Tourmalet and the Aspin. On the descent from the Tourmalet, Thomas Voeckler attacked from the field and closed up to the leaders by up to 20 seconds on the ascent to Col de Peyresourde, while Camaño and Flecha could no longer maintain the pace of the group and fell behind. Voeckler also had to pay tribute to his race to catch up and let the leading duo go.

De la Fuente was the first to climb the Peyresourde, while Wegmann could no longer keep up a few meters from the summit. On the following descent, Wegmann was able to approach again before he lost track again at the foot of the Col du Portillon. In the main field, T-Mobile took over the pace dictation and Cyril Dessel , driving in yellow , fell back, as did George Hincapie and Juan Miguel Mercado . De la Fuente was also first at the Portillon, followed by a 16-strong top group with the favorites for the overall victory. Damiano Cunego and David Arroyo from the favorites group attacked on the slightly uphill section to the last climb . De la Fuente let his two pursuers catch up, but the escape was over 24 kilometers from the goal.

In the final climb, the Rabobank team in the person of Michael Boogerd then increased the pace for its captain Denis Menshov , the winner of the Vuelta a España 2005 . The group shrank to seven drivers, namely Boogerd, Menschow, Carlos Sastre , Andreas Klöden , Levi Leipheimer , Cadel Evans and Floyd Landis . After Boogerd had done his job, Menschow attacked eight kilometers from the target. Klöden was the only one who couldn't follow the favorites. One kilometer before the mountain classification, Leipheimer attacked, which only Menschow and Landis could follow. In the final sprint of the three drivers, Menschow won ahead of Leipheimer and Landis.

Landis secured the yellow jersey with the eight second time credit for third place with this advantage over Dessel. During his escape, De la Fuente got the polka dot jersey that he had already worn on the 3rd stage .
