The 15th stage of the 2006 Tour de France took the riders from Gap over 187 kilometers to the prestigious winter sports resort L'Alpe d'Huez at an altitude of 1850 meters (HC category) on July 18, after the rest day the previous day . In addition to the 13.8-kilometer final climb, the riders also had to conquer the Col d'Izoard (2360 m, category HC) and the Col du Lautaret (2058 m, category 2).
At this stage, too, there were a few attempts to break away from the start. But only at kilometer 30 did a 25-man leading group break away. It included George Hincapie , Jens Voigt , Fränk Schleck , Axel Merckx , Christian Knees , Damiano Cunego and Stefano Garzelli , among others . On the climb to the Col d'Izoard, José Rujano attacked from the main field to get closer to the leading group. This fell apart due to the pace dictated by the strong climbers on the climb. Meanwhile, another group of four riders attacked in the main field, to which Juan Miguel Mercado caught up a short time later . Garzelli was the first to reach the summit of the Col d'Izoard solo with 1:07 minutes ahead of the 16 remaining in the leading group.
At the foot of the Col du Lautaret, Garzelli broke off his solo journey and let the pursuers overtake him. The top group remained with 18 drivers, followed by a nine-man chasing group around 3:20 minutes behind, followed by the main field, around 4:20 minutes behind the leaders. The lead of the pursuers on the main field was quickly used up, and so it fell back into the field on the ascent to Lautaret. In the leading group, David de la Fuente and Francisco Vila took a lead on the main field. This remained constant at the summit at 4:17 min. In Le Bourg-d'Oisans , at the beginning of the final ascent to L'Alpe d'Huez, the 15 leaders were still 3:16 minutes ahead of the field.
In the climb to L'Alpe d'Huez, the outliers were relegated from favorites to extras. Only Damiano Cunego, Eddy Mazzoleni and Fränk Schleck stood up to them. In the main field, T-Mobile and Rabobank shot into the final climb at high speed. There Matthias Kessler and Andreas Klöden attacked , whom only Floyd Landis and Cadel Evans could follow. Denis Menschow and Óscar Pereiro had to be demolished, and a little later Kessler too. After an attack by Landis, Klöden went with him. While Evans fell back, Levi Leipheimer and Carlos Sastre caught up from behind . In the top group, Cunego attacked to shake off Mazzoleni, while in the group of favorites Klöden once again pushed the pace that only Landis could keep up. Schleck then distanced Cunego two kilometers from the finish in order to secure the day's victory.
Landis was able to recapture the yellow jersey from Pereiro with his fourth place.
