The 8th stage of the Tour de France 2006 led the remaining 170 starters on July 9 over 181 km from Saint-Méen-le-Grand in a south-westerly direction through Brittany to Lorient .

The first driver launched an attack after only five kilometers. But up to km 46 the field did not allow any serious attempts to break away. Only then could the five drivers Matthias Kessler , David Zabriskie , Sylvain Calzati , Mario Aerts and Kjell Carlström break away from the field. At 56 km Patrice Halgand caught up with the leading group. After 16.5 km of escape, the six outliers had a maximum lead of 7:30 minutes before the Phonak team of runner-up Floyd Landis took over the pace work in the main field and slowly let the lead melt away.

Seven kilometers after the last intermediate sprint of the day, Calzati attacked from the leading group and split the group into three parts. The Kessler / Zabriskie / Aerts group was pulled out of the field approx. 18 km before the finish in Lorient, while Calzati extended his lead both on the field and on the chasing duo Halgand and Carlström. Overjoyed, Calzati reached the finish line as a soloist and celebrated his first tour success. It was also the first successful escape attempt on the tour that year. In the sprint of his former companions, Carlström won ahead of Halgand, 2:05 minutes behind. In the sprint of the peloton, Robbie McEwen prevailed once again, extending the lead in the fight for the green jersey.
