The United People's Party - Socialist Party ( Icelandic Sameiningarflokkur alþýðu - Sósíalistaflokkurinn , often just called Sósíalistaflokkurinn ) was a left-wing socialist communist party in Iceland . It existed from 1938 to 1968.

The party was founded in 1938 by former left wing members of the Social Democratic Party of Iceland and the Communist Party of Iceland . From 1956, the party took part in the electoral alliance People's Alliance ( Icelandic Alþýðubandalagið ) several left parties. In 1968 this alliance became a formal party, the Socialist Party lost its independence and became part of the People's Alliance.

The core of the Socialist Party was made up of around 1,500 members of the Communist Party of Iceland, which was fully absorbed into it. Due to its good organization, its strong support in the Icelandic trade union movement and the emphasis on an independent, national path to socialism, the Socialist Party was relatively successful in the elections for the Althing . So they won more votes than the Social Democratic Party of Iceland ( Icelandic Alþýðuflokkurinn ).

The United People's Party - Socialist Party was also twice involved in government: from 1944 to 1947 under Conservative leadership and from 1956 to 1958 under Liberal leadership.
