People's Alliance

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The People's Alliance ( isl. Alþýðubandalag , short AL) was an electoral association from 1956 to 1968 and a regular political party in Iceland from 1968 to 1999 .

history

The People's Alliance emerged as a left-wing split from social democracy . The founding of the party in 1968 brought together the communist faction and other Marxist splinter groups. The increasingly moderate Euro-Communist party turned against membership in NATO and the EU . With the exception of the elections for the Althing in 1987 and 1991, it received more votes than the Social Democratic Party of Iceland ( Icelandic Alþýðuflokkurinn ). Its best-known representative was Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson , Icelandic President from 1996 to 2016 .

In 1999, the People's Alliance merged with three other left-wing parties to form the Alliance ( Samfylkingin ), and in 2000 the party was officially founded.
