Hannibal Valdimarsson

Hannibal Valdimarsson (born January 13, 1903 on the farm Fremri-Arnardalur, Eyrarhreppur , today Ísafjarðarbær municipality ; † September 1, 1991 in Reykjavík ) was an Icelandic politician .

Life

Hannibal was born as a farmer's son in the Icelandic West Fjords . He became a teacher and initially worked at the kindergarten of Ísafjörður and primary schools in Akranes and Súðavík . From 1938 to 1964 and 1975 he was the principal of Ísafjörður Middle School.

Hannibal Valdimarsson was a member of Ísafjörður City Council from 1933 to 1949. He was a member of the Althing from 1946 to 1974 as a representative of various constituencies and was chairman of the Icelandic Social Democratic Party from 1952 to 1954 . He was Minister of Social Affairs and Health from 1956 to 1958 and Minister of Communication and Social Affairs from 1971 to 1973. After retiring from politics, he lived for a long time from 1974 on his farm in Selárdalur in the West Fjords, but had Sólveig with his wife also an apartment in Reykjavík. His brother Finnbogi Rútur Valdimarsson (1906–1989) also belonged to the Althing. Hannibal's six children include Jón Baldvin Hannibalsson , who was Iceland's finance minister from 1987 to 1988 and foreign minister from 1988 to 1995, and the philosopher and historian Arnór Hannibalsson (1934–2012).
