Transport links

The valley can only be reached from Bíldudalur via the 26 km long Ketildalavegur (road 619).

Settlement history

With 15 farms, this valley used to be one of the most densely populated areas in the Westfjords, now all farms have been abandoned.

It was considered one of the richest areas in the country in the 17th century, e.g. B. under Pastor Páll Björnsson (1621–1706), who was followed by a reputation for great learning, but who was also an influential large farmer. The Selárdalur farm of the same name was abandoned in 1988 as the penultimate one.

The last resident of a farm in this valley, Neðribær farm, died in winter 2010.

The Lutheran church in the valley was consecrated in 1861 and contains a number of handicrafts from the 18th century.

Farmer and self-taught artist: Samúel Jónsson

The farmer and artist Samúel Jónsson (1884–1969) lived on the Brautarholt farm until his death and created his naive sculptures. B. are based on the lion fountain of the Alhambra . This as well as the associated house and the small church that he also created were renovated from 1998 by volunteers under the direction of the German sculptor Gerhard König .

It was in front of this court that Sigur Rós recorded a title for their film Heima .

Fossils

In the 473 m high nearby Þorishlíðarfjall one finds fossils at 360 m height. It is about 13 million year old plant remains of hickory , wild grapevine and the like, which indicate a much milder climate at the time.
