Plessala ( Gallo : Ploesala , Breton Plesala ) is a town and commune Déléguée in the French commune of Le Mené with 1,677 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Côtes-d'Armor in the region of Brittany . The inhabitants are called Plessaliens / Plessaliennes .
geography
Plessala is located about 29 kilometers south-southeast of Saint-Brieuc and about 60 kilometers southwest of Saint-Malo in the center of the Côtes-d'Armor department.
history
As finds of stone axes from the Neolithic Age prove, the place has been settled for a long time. In addition, gold coins and a bronze deer figure from Gallo-Roman times were excavated. An Olivier de Plesala is mentioned in a deed of gift to Boquen Abbey in 1255. During the French Revolution, fierce fighting broke out between the Chouans and government troops. In 1828, the municipality ceded numerous hamlets to the neighboring municipalities of Saint-Gilles-du-Mené and Saint-Gouéno . The parish was part of the Loudéac district from 1793 to 1801. From 1801 to 1926 it was part of the Arrondissement Loudéac and has been part of the Arrondissement Saint-Brieuc ever since. And from 1793 to 2015 it was a municipality in the canton of Plouguenast .
With effect from January 1, 2016, the merger of all seven municipalities of the community association Communauté de communes du Mené resulted in the new municipality Le Mené , to which Plessala belongs. The municipality of Plessala belonged to the arrondissement of Saint-Brieuc and the canton of Plénée-Jugon .
Population development
From 1793 until the beginning of the First World War, the community always had more than 3,000 inhabitants. Due to the high number of those killed in the First World War and the flu wave of 1918, the population fell by 572 between 1911 and 1921 (1911-1921: -16.1%). And thus for the first time below the 3,000 inhabitant mark. Between 1931 and the turn of the millennium, rural exodus followed for decades (1931-1999: -39%). In recent years, the population has leveled off at 1,800-1,900 people.
