The official Encyclopedia Titanica website states that Daniel escaped in Lifeboat No. 3, one of the earliest lifeboats. There were also Thomas Cardeza , the publisher Henry Harper and the wife and daughter of Charles M. Hays .

After Daniel and the other survivors of the disaster had been taken aboard the passenger ship RMS Carpathia on the morning of April 15, 1912 , he made the acquaintance of Eloise Hughes Smith, an 18-year-old pregnant woman who was with the Downfall had lost her husband.
