The 7th stage of the Tour de France 2006 took the riders over 52 km from Saint-Grégoire to Rennes on July 8th and was immediately the first of two individual time trials .
The first 33 kilometers through the Rennes area to the refreshment station in Saint-Gilles showed a slightly undulating, but undemanding profile. The terrain was flat for the next 19 km. However, the route was very susceptible to wind. The interim measurement points were at km 16.5 in Gévezé , km 36.5 in L'Hermitage and at km 46.3 near the University of Rennes.
Sébastien Joly of La Française des Jeux , then 171st and last in the overall standings, already 36:26 minutes behind the leader Tom Boonen , was the first to start at 10:48 . Boonen took to the track as the last starter at 16:28.
As in the prologue, the German time trial champion Sebastian Lang from the Gerolsteiner team set the first real target time with 1:02:47 h. This time lasted for around two and a half hours. Time trial specialist Serhij Hontschar , who was clearly in the lead in all intermediate time measurements, undercut Lang's best time by 1:04 min to 1:01:43 h. With that he not only secured the stage win, but also the yellow jersey. Shortly after Honchar, Floyd Landis also undercut Lang's time by a few seconds. However, as with the prologue, Landis was unlucky, as he had to change it due to a defect in his time trial machine and thus again lost valuable seconds.
Among the tour favorites, Levi Leipheimer and Damiano Cunego , who lost 6:06 min and 6:35 min respectively to the winner of the day, disappointed , and Georg Totschnig also lost 4:00 min. With Bobby Julich , who slipped at the exit of a roundabout and fell on a curb, another favorite had to give up the race shortly after the start (1.5 km).
Strange things happened to Beat Zberg , who drove eight kilometers with a flat front tire because his team did not have a spare wheel with them. Only one kilometer before the finish line was he overtaken by another driver and was able to borrow a bike from his team.
