The 13th stage of the Tour de France 2006 on July 15th took the remaining 160 riders from Béziers along the Cevennes into the Rhone Valley to Montélimar . At 230 km, it was the longest stage of this year's event.

After the victory of an outlier the day before, many drivers looked for the chance to try to escape again at the beginning. At km 21, six riders from the peloton pulled away. Jens Voigt , Óscar Pereiro Sio , Sylvain Chavanel , Andrij Hrywko and Manuel Quinziato extended their lead, while Arnaud Coyot dropped back into the main field. Since Pereiro was already the best placed of the group, 28:50 minutes behind Landis, the field increased the lead and made no move to pursue. Shortly after the outliers had passed the penultimate mountain classification, the lead had increased to 28:25 minutes before Phonak began to shorten it because Floyd Landis' yellow jersey was in danger.

After Hrywko increased the pace in the last mountain classification, the other four drivers followed without any problems, while the initiator of the attack could not counter the counterattacks by Quinziato and Voigt and fell back. Voigt, Pereiro, Chavanel and Quinziato went on the last 25 kilometers without hrywko. Chavanel then attacked 14.5 kilometers from the finish, but without success. Pereiro launched the decisive attack 3.5 kilometers from the finish when he was able to pull away with Voigt's help. Voigt won in an exciting sprint to the finish. He had attacked again shortly before the finish, then noticed that Pereiro was able to follow him, slowed down again to then prevail in the finish sprint.

In the peloton, after the outliers had already reached the goal, the Rabobank team took over the lead in order to reduce the lead a little. It finally crossed the finish line almost 30 minutes after the winner. In retrospect, this time difference decided the overall victory of the Tour de France 2006 in favor of Óscar Pereiro, who ended up 32 seconds ahead of Andreas Klöden in the final standings .

Due to the huge deficit of the main field, Landis lost the yellow jersey to Óscar Pereiro. In addition, the CSC team took the lead in the team classification. The waiting period was increased from 9 to 10% due to the backlog, otherwise the entire field would have had to be excluded from the tour.
