The sixteenth stage of the 2004 Tour de France was a 15.5 km individual time trial from Le Bourg-d'Oisans up to L'Alpe d'Huez . The cyclists had to overcome 1130 meters in altitude. According to the organizer, 900,000 people lined the 21 switchbacks .

The climb to L'Alpe d'Huez

The start took place every one or two minutes in the reverse order of the overall ranking. Accordingly, the 157th in the overall standings, the French Sébastien Joly , started first at 2:00 p.m. (CEST). The last starter was the yellow jersey , Lance Armstrong .

Armstrong, who was later disqualified for doping, won the 16th stage ahead of Jan Ullrich and Andreas Klöden . Ivan Basso and Francisco Mancebo lost a lot of time on Armstrong, Klöden and Ullrich.
