Ivan Basso (front) and Lance Armstrong about 500 meters from the finish
The twelfth stage of the Tour de France 2004 was the first stage in the Pyrenees and led from Castelsarrasin over the Col d'Aspin up to the first mountain arrival in La Mongie on the Tourmalet . The two mountains were each category 1 and awaited the drivers from 155 kilometers of the 198 kilometers. There were also two intermediate sprints on the stage.
On the first kilometers there were attacks by Finot and Ljungqvist. Kirchen and Vansevenant followed. They were able to get a maximum advantage of 4:20 minutes. Various drivers tried to move up to the top group - including Jens Voigt and Thomas Voeckler - but they did not succeed.
The leading group was able to hold out except for the ascent of the Col d'Aspin. There she caught up with the field. On the ascent, Simeoni, Moreau and Virusque tried to escape, but this was immediately thwarted by the field. Shortly before the summit, Rasmussen attacked with Martínez. Martínez was swallowed up again from the field.
During the climb to the Tourmalet, Jan Ullrich and Tyler Hamilton could no longer keep up with their helpers and Armstrong. In contrast, Andreas Klöden , Carlos Sastre and Francisco Mancebo showed a good performance. Ivan Basso was able to pull away with Lance Armstrong and also won the stage.
